Experience JOY with thoughtful design.

Custom Joy provides tailor-made solutions for all. With our client-centered approach, there is no “one-size fits all” or cookie-cutter codebook that we turn to. Our ability to listen and implement what is most important to you, paired with interdisciplinary team leadership, yields a finished product you will surely be proud of!

Tailor-made spaces to improve life for all.

We are a couple of occupational therapists with a burning desire to change the housing landscape. Custom Joy strives for a more inclusive housing market so everyone can choose where they live! As a women/mom-owned construction business, we aim to break down barriers, bust myths, and blow beyond the 0.15% of universally accessible homes in the U.S. today. We provide a beautiful final product when doing so!

We Work With:

All ages, all abilities, ALL people

Those who want their home to look great and function well too

Those struggling to find ways to remain in their beloved home and seeking to age in place.

Those with a temporary or permanent disability

Anyone wanting to plan, whether in their current home or seeking a new place to call home.

We also work with your design-build team (even if you already have one!) from architects, builders, and kitchen/bath designers.

Yes, we can work virtually!

How it Began

It was brutal as an occupational therapist watching patients get discharged to home without knowing how they would enter or get around their homes to complete their daily tasks. This experience as an OT, paired with a public health background, gave me a ton of insight into the gaps within the housing industry.

Simultaneously, my husband and I struggled to find a home to grow and build a future. The lack of homes for us to ‘live in place’ and host family gatherings nudged me to take my profession beyond the hospital’s walls.

We had such difficulty finding a home with all the necessities on the main floor; therefore, building our house, starting from scratch, was the only option. Working with a realtor, architect, and contractor, we hand-picked our team and were off. As an OT, always forward-thinking, it was only natural for me to elevate our plans with universal design features to make everyone feel welcome.

Some of these features included :

  • Wide hallways and doorways.
  • A ramp to enter the home.
  • Curbless / zero entry showers.
  • Partially accessible bathroom on the main floor.
  • And more!

This ground-up project management experience led to many other residential projects. Gretchen and I started working with clients together, combining design and real estate expertise with our joint healthcare backgrounds, and then one day; we realized the work we are doing is genuinely changing people’s lives!

Custom Joy is excited to continue our mission to deliver thoughtful spaces and joyful places for all
